The US federal government has partially shut down.

The US federal government has partially shut down even though the Senate approved a last-minute funding deal. The funding lapse began Saturday night. The bill funds most government agencies until September, but the Department of Homeland Security received funding for only two weeks. The bill has not yet been approved by the House of Representatives.

President Donald Trump made the deal with Democrats after they refused to provide additional money for immigration enforcement. This is the second government shutdown in a year. The previous 2025 shutdown lasted 43 days and seriously affected public services and federal workers.

This shutdown is expected to be shorter because the House will return to session soon, although the White House has ordered several departments to prepare shutdown plans. Lawmakers will use the two-week period to negotiate a final agreement.

Democrats are demanding stricter rules and oversight for immigration enforcement officers. Criticism has increased after the fatal shooting of nurse Alex Pretti in Minneapolis, and the Justice Department has started a civil rights investigation into the incident.
